Fighting for the Rights of the Disabled
A law student from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, 18- year-old Lika Revishvili has been physically disabled since birth. Lika gets around with the help of a crutch and her father, who has devoted 24 hours a day to helping her.
But in Georgia, people with disabilities are deeply stigmatized. They are usually excluded from mainstream society, often attend separate schools, and are sometimes institutionalized(使进专门机构). The fact that Lika made it to law school is extraordinary. Her success largely depends on the sacrifices her family makes for her, but most Georgian families do not have the resources to provide for their disabled children.
Since 2000, USAID has sponsored delegates from more than 20 developing countries to attend the biannual International Congress on Children and Youth with Disabilities in their Home Communities. Lika was selected to be one of 16 candidates representing Georgia at the 2004 conference in Norway, which addressed the legal rights of disabled people and explored programs that work to include disabled people in community life. Attendees focused on how to create formal networks of support within communities that integrate the health, education and recreation needs of disabled children.
After returning, Lika said “she thinks Georgia is one step closer to realizing the importance of integrating disabled people into community institutions. Meeting so many people from other countries working on disabled children’s rights made me believe that there really is a chance that we can make a difference in Georgia.”
Another Congress participant offered Lika a job when she returned, and she now educates non-disabled children about the legal and human rights of disabled kids. I could never have imagined myself in the role of a trainer for children having no disabilities, but attending the Norway Congress gave me a lot of confidence.
Lika and the rest of the Georgian delegation plan to continue to work together in the future to improve disabled children’s access to education and social services in Georgia.
41. Why is Lika able to go to law school?
A. Because her ability is outstanding.
B. Becuse her family makes sacrifices for her.
C. Because law school treats all the students equally.
D. Because Lika persuades the law school to admit her.
42. The underlined word stigmatized in the second paragraph prabably means _______.
A. made feel bad and unimportant B. criticized
C. taken care of D. sympathized
43. The main task of the participants at the conference in Norway is to ________.
A. care for the health of the disabled
B. explore recreation programs that the disabled can take part in in community life.
C. create networks to support the disabled in education.
D. create formal networks that combine the health, education and recreation needs of disabled children.
44. Which statement is Not true about Lika?
A. She was born physically disabled.
B. She was elected as a representative to attend the biannual International Congress held in Norway.
C. She believes that they can make a difference in Georgia with so many people concerning the disabled.
D. She was sure she could get the chance to educate healthy children.
45. What’s the passage mainly talking about?
A. Fighting for the rights of the disabled.
B. The life of Lika Revishvili.
C. The unfair treatment the disabled suffered in Georgia.
D. The function of USAID

D项的陈述与第三段的最后一句“Attendees focused on how to create formal networks of support within communities that integrate the health, education and recreation needs of disabled children.”

Moving in with a boyfriend causes women to eat more unhealthily and put on weight. But the opposite is true for men, whose long-term health benefits when they move in with a female partner.
Dieticians at Newcastle University said both partners try to please one another, and so change their dietary habits to suit their other half.
It leads men to eat more light meals, such as salads, fruit and vegetables, while women choose to make creamier, heavier dishes curry or rich pasta sauces, which may please their partner.
Women still have the strongest long-term influence over the couple’s diet and lifestyle, as they still have the traditional role of shopper and cook in most households.
The report, by Newcastle University’s Human Nutrition Research Centre, reviewed the finding of a variety of research projects from the UK, North America and Australia, which looked at the eating and lifestyle habits of couples.
The research shows that women are more likely to put on weight and increase their consumption of foods high in fat and sugar when they move in with their partner.
Women also use food as a comfort when dealing with emotional stress and have been found to gain weight when a relationship ends, while the same finding has not been observed in men.
Many couples reported food as being central to their partnership, and eating together in the evening was particularly important to many.
Report author and registered dietician Dr. Amelia Lake said, “The research has shown that your partner is a strong influence on lifestyle and people who are trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.”

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.
(1) 以约30个词概括短文的要点;
a) 叙述你为什么向别人道谢的一次真实或虚构的经历;
b) 你是如何认识到向别人道谢的重要性的;
(1)可以使用实例或其它论述方法支持你的论点, 也可以参照阅读材料的内容, 但不得直接引用原文中的句子;
In this passage, the writer mainly tells us two of his experiences of being helped by strangers. After he wrote them thank-you notes, he realized that saying “thank you” to others meant so much.
I have a similar experience. Once when I was about to go home after school, it was raining so heavily that I had to wait for the rain to stop. But after half an hour it was still raining. Seeing this, the guard at the gate offered to lend me his umbrella. I accepted at once. Thanks to his help, I got home on time without getting wet. The next morning, when I returned the umbrella to the guard, I said thank you to him and left him a note expressing my gratitude sincerely. To my surprise, he said no one had ever written him to say thank you, and it meant a lot to him.
So in my opinion, saying thank you to others is not only easy but also meaningful to the person who says it and the receiver!
