Unit 4 My Neighbourhood
Lesson 25
Class opening
Say “Hi/ Hello, class! How are you doing today? It’s a beautiful/ windy/ day, isn’t it? Are you ready for class?” Help the students respond in an appropriate way.
Introduce the topic for Unit4: “ My Neighborhood.” For suggestions on introducing new units, see “Teaching Techniques” at the back of this guide. Here are some step-by-step instructions for one way to introduce this unit.
You may begin by saying, “In the last unit”, we talked about our family. In this unit, we’re going to talk about our neighborhood.
Have students brainstorm what they know about their neighborhood and community, including shops, streets, buses, public buildings and so on. If your school is in the countryside, you may focus on a certain village or town. It is important for the students to start from their own, genuine and actual experiences of their life.
Step1: Ask the students what they can see in the picture and what the reading is about.
Step2: Come to “think about it”.
Step3: Let the students listen to the tape with the following questions: Where are Jenny and Brian? Why do you think so? Have a discussion.
Step4: Ask the students to read the story silently. Then have a further discussion:
How do Jenny and Brian usually go to school?
Why don’t they take the school bus today?
What are their favorite places on the way to school?
Step5: Ask the students to work in groups and draw a map on which show the favorite places jenny and Brian pass on their way to school. Then ask them to retell the story with the aid of the map. |
